External information hypothesis
The perceived structure reflects information existing independently of the observer.
Predicts: identical glyphs/coordinates across blinded observers; structure follows stimulus transformation in ways tied to an external source.
For: reports of recurring, spatially stable forms; broad category similarity across observers.
Against: exact correspondence never demonstrated under blinding; no public participant-level dataset.
Decisive experiment: preregistered cross-subject symbol/coordinate matching (see design).

Laser-speckle hypothesis
Real optical structure (speckle/interference) is transformed by altered perception into glyph-like forms.
Predicts: forms localized to illuminated field; dependence on surface/grating; similar categories (same physics) but not necessarily identical details.
For: classical optics guarantees real structured input; at least one participant explicitly interpreted their experience this way; matches spatial-stability reports.
Against: doesn't obviously explain high-information "text" quality of some reports without adding pattern completion.

Pareidolia / pattern-completion
Ambiguous structure becomes writing-like forms via the brain's drive to find familiar patterns.
Predicts: category-level similarity ("writing-like"), person-specific details; stronger effects with priming.
For: robust cognitive-science literature; explains why forms resemble known scripts.
Against: alone doesn't explain reported spatial stability.

Expectancy hypothesis
Knowledge of "the code" narrative shapes what people experience and report.
Predicts: rates drop sharply with naive participants; demand characteristics matter.
For: most participants arrive pre-briefed; psychedelic suggestibility research; functional unblinding is inherent.
Against: doesn't address Goler's own original observation (though he was also steeped in simulation narratives).

Entoptic / ocular mechanisms
Eye optics, floaters, and accommodation dynamics contribute structure.
Predicts: onset correlates with accommodation; individual eye anatomy shapes percepts.
For: well-documented entoptic phenomena exist.
Against: typically explains sparse floaters, not dense glyph fields.

Shared neurobiology
Common visual architecture generates recurring geometric forms across individuals.
Predicts: cross-person similarity at category level; forms resembling known geometric-hallucination taxonomies.
For: Klüver-style form constants are replicated science.
Against: form constants are usually grids/spirals, not writing-like glyphs.
Rating: Moderately supported for categories
Simulation hypothesis
The phenomenon reveals a computational substrate of reality.
Predicts: everything H1 predicts, plus that the information constitutes evidence about reality's nature.
For: philosophical interest; nothing yet.
Against: depends entirely on H1 being true, which is undemonstrated; even then the inferential leap is large.
