The DMT Laser Experiment, Explained

The phenomenon behind the headlines: what people report seeing when a diffracted red laser is viewed under N,N-DMT — and exactly how far the evidence goes.

1. What people report

Observers describe the diffraction lattice of a 650 nm red laser resolving — under N,N-DMT — into structured forms: tiny glyphs, geometric lattices, writing-like sequences, sometimes described as animated or "self-executing". Many describe the imagery as localized to the illuminated field rather than floating freely.

2. Where the experiment originated

Danny Goler first described the observation around 2019–2020 (his own accounts vary; August 2020 is commonly reported). He shared it with researcher Dr. Andrew Gallimore in October 2021 and published a protocol description as a pilot study in IPI Letters on January 8, 2025 (DOI 10.59973/ipil.158 — a non-peer-reviewed News and Views contribution). 3. What the laser contributes

A laser is coherent light: its waves are in phase. Passed through a diffraction grating it casts a stable lattice of points; interacting with any roughness (surfaces, dust, the eye's own optics) it produces speckle — granular, high-contrast structure. This structure is physically real and identical for everyone looking at the same projection.

4. What DMT contributes

N,N-DMT is a potent serotonergic psychedelic that profoundly alters visual processing (peer-reviewed: Timmermann et al., PNAS 2023). It increases pattern salience, geometric hallucination, and emotional/interpretive intensity. The combination means: real optical structure + a brain primed to organize and elaborate structure.

5. Why people call it "code"

The reported forms resemble writing systems — some observers compare them to Katakana or machine code. "Code of Reality" began as Goler's name for the perceived phenomenon and became the name of his organization. The label carries an interpretation: that something like information-bearing text is being perceived. That interpretation is precisely what remains unproven.
